A wood sashi-netsuke

Signed Shogyoku, 19th century
Length: 5 3/8 in. (13.72 cm.)

A stained soft wood, probably boxwood, shashi-netsuke of the usual form with a long slender body moving inwards at both extremeties to fit on a sash, finely incised on the front and back with a reishi fungus, the top forming a stylized phoenix spreading its wing in flight with gold highlights; signed on a rectangular red lacquer tablet "Shogyoku".

Provenance: Raymond and Frances Bushell

Condition: Excellent with some slight scratches.
