AN INTERIOR PAINTED SNUFF BOTTLE by MASHAO XUAN Signed Mashao Xuan (1867 - 1939) and dated Winter 1903 The bottle is painted in subtle shades of black, brown, green and blue pigments, on one side with a majestic mountainous landscape, the other side with some calligraphy work with a poem written by Wang Changling during the Tang Dynasty. The poems may be translated to: It is night, icy rain is falling as we follow the River into Wu,On a still dawn I will see you off, how lonely the mountains of Chu will be. If my kith and kin at Luoyang ask me, answer "My heart is a sheet of ice in a jade vase" H: 2 3/8 in. (6.2 cm.) excluding stopper Condition: very good Ref. SB636 SOLD
