Meiji 1890

Ref. WP2292

Tairo no Kiyomori was a ruthless ruler of Japan in the 12th century. Toward the end of his life, he started to go insane. The shapes in his snow-covered garden began to look like the skulls of his victims. This is a print from the series New Forms of Thirty-six Ghosts, one of the best work by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi. This print is highlighted with urushi-e and blind embossing.
