AN EARLY AND PARTIALLY PAINTED WOOD NETSUKE
Unsigned, Edo Period (18th century)
A tall wood figure depicting Shoki standing on feet, holding his sword with the right hand, and grabbing with the other hand an oni sitting on his head. The overall surface is very well patinated with rubbed blue, red and black pigments over a white base.
Compare with a very similar example illustrated in Barry Davies Oriental Art Ltd, 'The Robert S. Huthart Collection of Non-Iwami Netsuke' (London, 1998), pp. 34-35, cat. no. 19. Both pieces are identical in posture, size and proportions and could have very well been done by the same hand or workshop. In the catalog, Barry Davies Oriental refers to a drawing of a netsuke of an oni with Shoki on his shoulder, signed Jugyoku, illustrated in Frederick Meinertzhagen (edited by George Lazarnick), 'The Meinertzhagen Card Index on Netsuke in the Archives of the British Museum', part A (New York, 1986), p. 257.
5 1/8 in. (13 cm.) high
Condition: fairly good, with the hand and feet repaired and a few cracks.
