AN IVORY NETSUKE by TOMOCHIKA

Signed Tomochika (Tokyo), Late Edo to Meiji Period (19th century)

A well patinated study of Shoki, the demon dweller, standing and holding his halberd in the right hand. The himotoshi is formed by two holes in the back along the waist line, forming a larger and a smaller hole. Signed 'Tomochika' on the left hip near the himotoshi.

Compare with a similar example illustrated on card 1008a of the Meinertzhagen Card Index, published in Frederick Meinertzhagen (edited by George Lazarnick), 'The Meinertzhagen Card Index on Netsuke in the Archives of the British Museum', part B (New York, 1986), p. 894.
