AN IVORY NETSUKE
Unsigned, Edo Period (probably 18th century)
A tall and well patinated figure of a seated dog, the front left paw raised and resting on the chest. The eyes are inlaid in dark horn. The himotoshi is formed by a smaller hole and another larger located on the back leg of the animal.
This fine netsuke proves that very intricate carving is not always key to a good netsuke. This piece presents very little katabori carving and is very smooth, yet the dog shows much power and character. The simple shape and wonderful patina are reminiscent of the 18th century 'fox priest' netsuke of the Inari Cult in Osaka.
2 1/2 in. (6.5cm.) high
