A WOOD NETSUKE by SUKEYUKI
Signed Sukeyuki, Edo Period (19th century)
A finely carved netsuke depicting a snake wrapped around a toad. Judging from the scene, it is difficult to say who is winning the fight, as the snake is biting the rear leg of of the amphibian while the latter is biting the tail of the reptile. The eyes are inlaid in light and dark horn over gold, a feature typical of Sukeyuki. Signed 'Sukeyuki' in a rectangular tablet on the body of the snake.
The snake and the frog are commonly depicted in Japanese art, especially in netsuke. Each animal fear the other in the same manner, as one can eat the other and vice-versa. This netsuke illustrates this fact.
