A GUAN-TYPE CELADON VASE

Longquan Kilns, Southern Song Dynasty (1127 - 1279)

The vase, with a globular body and a tall and thick neck terminating in an everted mouth rim, is covered with a rich celadon glaze. The glaze shows a very pleasant crazing that has stained darkly in some areas due to burial conditions. The naked paste can be seen on the base, where it has burned to an orange tone. On the mouth rim the glaze thins, showing the burning of the paste to a similar orange tone.

H: 5 1/2 in. (13.9 cm.)

For a similar example, see Regina Krahl, Chinese Ceramics from the Meiyintang Collection, vol. I (London, 1994), cat. no. 555, p. 296.

Conditions: a small chip to the mouth rim
