A LARGE BLUE AND RED CRACKLED PORCELAIN VASE
Qing Dynasty, Kangxi period (1662-1722)
Heavily potted, the pear-shaped body flares dramatically to form a trumpet-like mouth. The whole piece rests on a splayed and stepped foot.
The vase was covered with a stained crackled glaze and then covered with a light cobalt blue glaze with reserves of Langyao-like patches on two sides. The color of these red areas is a rich raspberry, and the two patches overlap the light blue glaze.
The stepped foot has suffered some breaks in a distant past, as the broken areas have smoothed out with usage, showing the very compact paste characteristic of the period.
The base is of a rather complex design, with the stepped foot leading to a ledge and sinking again to a deeply recessed area. The whole base is crackled and stained in a mushroom tone.
All these characteristics point to a Kangxi date, probably prior to the development of the flambe glaze towards the end of the reign, since similar or more dramatic effects could have been achieved using this new form of monochrome glaze.
