AN ENAMELED PORCELAIN SHALLOW BOWL
Qing Dynasty, Shunzhi period (1644-1661)
The shallow bowl or deep plate is decorated inside with a central medallion of peonies in iron red, aubergine, and yellow enamel with foliage in deep green enamel, over a background of iron red geometric patterns. The central medallion is surrounded by a band of of ruyi heads in red, green, and yellow, and this in turn is surrounded by another band of iron red geometric patterns. Near the mouth rim, a last band of decorations shows more peonies over a geometric pattern in the same palette.
The outside of the shallow bowl shows a border of spirals near the rim, typical of Shunzhi porcelain, with further sprays of peonies and a final border around the foot also typical of the period.
The base has a channel which also shows up in some Shunzhi porcelain, as well as in Kangxi pieces. The paste in the channel shows that it is not yet the compact paste to be found later in the Kangxi reign.
The manner of painting the peonies, the profusion of geometric patterns, the type of borders, and the not-so-well levigated paste (there are occasional small lumps of impurities in the paste), all point to the Shunzhi reign of the Qing Dynasty.
