A LARGE BOWL WITH BROWN SPLASHES ON A BLACK GLAZE
Cizhou type, Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279)
Probably from Henan, this large bowl has a deep black glaze with striking brown splashes wider at the rim and thinning as they converge towards the center. There are some brown splashes on the outside as well, and the black glaze thins at the rim to result in an almost golden tone.
The porous paste is seen where the glaze ends on the outside, although coverage of this surface is quite good. The foot shows the knife-cut trait of this period, slightly slanted downwards.
Diam. 8 1/4 in. (22.9 cm.)
H. 3 1/4 in. (8.4 cm.)
Condition: Overall in good condition, with a small chip to the rim and a light craquelure due to age, and haphazard scratches from usage.
