A FINE DAOGUANG MARK & PERIOD "MEDALLION" BOWL
Qing Dynasty, Daoguang period (1820-1850)
This bowl belongs to a group of produced during the Daoguang period, but that had its origins in the Jiaqing reign.
The reserve medallions are separated by an elegant design of lotus flowers with scrolls and swirls over a blue ground. In the reserves or medallions, over a white background, scenes from the story of the "Cowherd and Weaver Girl" can be seen in fine detail.
On the inside, against a white background and framed by a blue line at the rim, another scene from the same story is depicted, showing the cowherd with a buddhist deity, kept aloft by a flock of birds.
There is an evident dicotomy between the more rigid decoration on the inside and the more free-flowing decoration in the medallions, and this is explained by the fact that the bowls were made in Jingdezhen and decorated in underglaze blue there, before being sent to the imperial court, where they were enameled.
On the base, the finely drawn six character mark of the Daoguang emperor in seal script can be seen.
