A FINE AND ELEGANT DAOGUANG MARK & PERIOD BOWL
Qing Dynasty, Daoguang period (1820-1850)
A medium sized white bowl with a lip around the mouth rim, showing a very elegant and restrained enameled design of a fruit branch and lingzhi fungus at the base of the branch. The branch goes "over the wall" to continue on the inside. It is not entirely clear which fruit is indicated here, but the persimmon is the most likely considering the shape. One of the virtues of the persimmon tree was long life, and so the design, along with the lingzhi fungus, conveys wishes for happiness and long life (see reference).
The way the fruits are drawn, without outlines and only dots to convey shape, is unusual and very pleasing to the eye. The beautiful enameling of the fruits goes from a yellow-green at the top to an increasingly stronger pink at the bottom. The design also avoids the tendency found during the previous reign (Jiaqing) and the Daoguang reign of filling the entire space. The bowl suceeds in thus conveying a serene and elegant design.
The lip on the mouth rim characterizes some small to medium bowls of this period.
On the base, in iron red, can be seen the six character mark of the Daoguang emperor in iron red.
