A RARE AND FINE LONGQUAN CENSER

Southern Song to Yuan Dynasty (1127-1368)

A small Longquan censer in the most desirable of colors: a striking blue-green glaze applied thickly to the porcellaneous body.

The shape is of a classic bronze Ding tripod censer: The compressed globular body rests on three grinning monster masks that emit a substance that become the feet. The paste can be seen here, as a grayish white where not burned, and as orange where burnt in the kiln. Above the main body, a short neck and flaring mouth can be seen. Body and mouth are connected by a pair of handles in the shape of fish with scales, somewhat obscured by the generous layers of glaze. The glaze covers the interior as well, and the potting of the piece can be appreciated as swirls at the bottom.

The bottom of the body has an old collector's sticker that reads "celadon".

H: 3 1/2 in. (9 cm.)

W: 4 3/8 in. (11.1 cm.)

Condition: Excellent; a minute chip to the unglazed portion of one foot

Literature: A very similar censer with fish handles but with feet in the shape of elephant heads can be found in "Chinese Ceramic Treasures; a selection from Ulricehamm East Asian Museum, including the Carl Kempe Collection" fig. 353
