A LONGQUAN BOWL OF STYLIZED FLOWER SHAPE
Northern Song Dynasty (906-1127)
A simple but elegant bowl of a deep green color, pointing to an early date within the Song period, in contrast to the more yellowish color found later in the Dynasty.
The bowl rests on a small foot that is free of the usual grit. The foot exhibits the "ginger" colored marks on the cut surface; a "chicken heart" results from the compression of the clay by the small foot. The sides of the bowl ascend in a curve that reveals the stepped potting, and end in a mouth rim notched to resemble a flower --often said to be a hibiscus flower. The glaze inside shows more wear than the more lustrous outside.
Diameter: 4 3/4 in. (11.8 cm)
Condition: Very good; a small potting flaw to the inside of the bowl and some wear to the inside.
