AN IMPERIAL YELLOW DAOGUANG GLAZED BOWL

Dynasty, Daoguang period Mark and of the Period (1820-1850)

This medium sized bowl is glazed all over, except for the base, in an imperial yellow glaze, and decorated on the outside and the inside cavetto with incised rossettes with five sides, resembling the ball flowers found in Chinese porcelain. Between the rossettes on the outside there are incised cloud designs, and a lappet border on the base.

This type of bowl is known from previous reigns, and an identical example can be seen with an imperial Qianlong mark and of the period in "Chinese Ceramics IV; Qing Dynasty". (see references)

The mark is also of imperial quality, and the calligrapher --among the many used by the Daoguang emperor-- can be identified in at least one piece in the Weishaupt collection (fig. 41, mark 41) as seen in the book by Avitabile (see references).
