A SIX LOBED BOWL WITH INCISED DECORATION, QINBAI WARE
Northern Song (11 or 12th century)
Even though the Xicun wares were active from the Tang Dynasty to the Song Dynasty, a Tang date is not claimed to err on the conservative side.
The early, Tang Xicun wares had mainly a milky-white to a grey green color, and sophisticated designs, phoenixes, and flowers with ring-matting and/or iron-brown spots for emphasis (see reference).
The design on this nicely potted bowl consists of incised lines representing a stylized coiled dragon, and it is more simplified than the best Tang versions, yet not as degraded as those more frequently found in the Song period; yet, a Tang date can not be ruled out based just on the more simple design.
The coiled dragon medallion seen on the cavetto of the bowl, is repeated in oval medallions on each of the six lobes of the ivory glazed bowl.
