A FINELY CARVED IVORY OKIMONO

Signed Akidai?, Meiji Period (late 19th century)

A magnificent carving of a Bijin wearing an ample kimono decorated with raised cherry blossoms. She stands and carries in the right hand a pierced hanging basket with a large branch of chrysanthemum, fitted with a long chain which she holds with the other hand.

The workmanship is one of a master with very fine details and lively rendering.

H. 7 7/8 in. (20 cm.)

Provenance: Private Collection in Colorado, active from the 1960's to the late 1980's

Literature: A very similar example is illustrated in Achim Hartman, 'Okimono: Masterpieces of Japanese Decorative Sculpture during the Meiji Period, from the Terespani Collection', cat. no. 17.
