A LARGE JADE AND ZITAN RUYI SCEPTER

Qing Dynasty (18th to early 19th century)

The large hardwood scepter is inlaid in the usual manner with finely carved domed plaques of greenish white mottled jade. The largest and top one is carved with a bat and a large peach, the middle plate with fingered citron and the bottom with with a ripe pomegranate. All these are popular symbols in China: the bat represents Good Luck and Happiness, and is often associated with the peach which symbolizes Longevity. Fingered-citron are also referred to as Buddha's hand and symbolizes Happy Life, and the Pomegranate represents Fertility. The combination of the three fruits (peach, fingered-citron and pomegranate) has for meaning 'Much Happiness, Long Life and Many Sons'

L: 21 1/2 in. (54 cm.)

Provenance: Private Collection in Colorado, active from the 1960's to the late 1980's

Condition: Overall in very good condition. Some cracks to the jade most likely original to the carving, as can be seen in the photographs. The setting of the top plate has minor damage and needs attention.
