A PAIR OF IMPERIAL BLUE AND WHITE BOWLS, DAOGUANG MARK

Daoguang Six-Character Seal Mark and of the Period (1821 - 1850)

A pair of well potted bowl with flared mouth, resting on a cylindrical foot and painted in two shades of underglaze blue with the 'Ba Jixiang' design. The design consists of buddhist symbols, including the Wheel, Conch, Canopy, Umbrella, Flower, Jar, Fish, and Knot, intertwined with tendrils. The base of the foot is decorated with with a band of lappets, and a double-line in its center. Another double-line is also painted at the mouth. The interior of the bowls is undecorated.

The Ba Jixiang pattern was introduced from the Tibetan Lamaist Art in the Yuan dynasty and remained a popular subject during the Ming and Qing Dynasty. Between the period of Yongle and Qianlong, the attributes were always depicted in the specific order listed above but variations were found thereafter. The present pair of bowls display the symbols in the correct order.
