A TALL AND FINELY CARVED BAMBOO AND IVORY FLOWER VASE

Meiji Period (Late 19th century)

An excellent bamboo flower vase finely carved in high relief and inlaid with ivory, stagshorn and dark wood with a continuous scene depicting five Sennin and a dragon in an enchanted forest. The detail of the carving is remarkable and the figures very lively. There are two seals with archaic script carved on square ivory plaques and located near the foot.

H. 15.5 in. (39.5 cm.)

Provenance: Private Collection in Colorado, active from the 1960's to the late 1980's

Condition: Overall in good condition with a wonderful patina. The ivory have some cracks, and some have been filled. The bottom has been drilled, as can be seen in the photographs.
