A PAIR OF IMPERIAL BLUE AND WHITE BOWLS, XIANFENG MARK
Xianfeng six-character Mark and of the Period (1851 - 1861)
A pair of well potted bowls with rounded body and slightly flared mouth, resting on a cylindrical foot and similarly decorated in delicate shades of underglaze blue. The outside wall is painted with a continuous scene of birds and large peonies growing among rockwork, between two double-lines. The interior of the bowl is painted with with a roundel bordered by a double-line and depicting a spray of peonies and flies, and another single line just below the mouth. The base bears a six-character mark of the Xianfeng reign.
The reign of Xianfeng was short and one of great turmoil, therefore the production of Imperial porcelain was quite limited and is rare today. The decoration with the subtle shades of blue is reminiscent of the style that would later predominate during the Guangxu period.
