AN ARCHAIC BRONZE FOOD VESSEL, GUI

Western Zhou Dynasty (1,100-770 BC)

A simple yet very elegant and well patinated bronze vessel formed by a bowl raised on a cylindrical foot and flanked with two handles emerging from the mouth of a mythical beast. The foot and the upper body are similarly decorated with stylized confronting phoenix and taotie masks. The interior of the bowl is inscribed with archaic characters. The vessel bears a very good and rich patina with malachite and cuprite inclusions.
