A FINELY CARVED WHITE JADE PLAQUE

Qing dynasty (18th/19th century)

Of circular form, the plaque is carved with two confronting bats between two peaches, and sprays of blossoming prunus. Two further bats are carved on either side on the outside ring.

In Chinese mythology, the bat symbolizes good luck and happiness. In the present example, the bats are confronted which is synonymous with redoubled fortune. The peach symbolizes longevity and is often associated with bats.

Diam. 4in. (10.2 cm.)
