PAIR OF GILT BRONZE HU-SHAPE COVERED VESSELS

Han Dynasty (206 BC - 221 AD)

Of the usual hu-shape form with a globular body and tapered neck, flanked with a taotie mask ring-handle on either side. The fitted cover is decorated with three phoenix, which would serve as feet when the cover is removed and placed on the ground.

Compare with a similar example illustrated in Gisele Croes' catalog for the XVIIe Biennal des Antiquaires - Paris 1994, p. 68-69.
