A WHITE JADE SNUFF BOTTLE

1750–1820

White nephrite of even color throughout, of rectangular form with tapered shoulders, a broad cylindrical neck and a recessed foot, each side carved in relief with two egrets and lotuses within a panel.

Egrets and lotus form the rebus "May you pass your exams all the way," referring to the civil service examination. See Terese Tse Bartholomew, Hidden Meaning in Chinese Art (San Francisco: 2006), no. 4.10.1.
