Yangzhou Seal School, 扬州派 1800–1850
Five-color glass overlay on a clear ground of pear shape form raised on a small foot, carved all-over with a cat, dragonfly, butterfly and flies amongst narcissus, chrysanthemums, bamboo and lingzhi growing in archaistic planters.
The cat is a symbol of longevity and is often associated with the butterfly. See Terese Tse Bartholomew, Hidden Meaning in Chinese Art (San Francisco: 2006), no. 7.8. The archaistic vessels and some of the plants are also related to longevity.
