1750–1820
Sapphire-blue glass overlay on milky-white ground, of pear shape with a blue-rimmed mouth and recessed foot, carved on one side with ducks and lotus, symbol of marital harmony.
Ducks and lotus together are a symbol of marital harmony. Aside from the excellent quality of the carving, a striking characteristic of this bottle is the deep sapphire-blue color, which is unusual and different from most blue overlay. A bottle with similar blue overlay with a carved lotus pond and attributed to the imperial glassworks from the Mary and George Bloch collection is illustrated in Hugh Moss, Victor Graham and Ka Bo Tsang, A Treasury of Chinese Snuff Bottles: The Mary and George Bloch Collection, 5 volumes (Hong Kong: 1998), vol. 5 Glass, part 2, cat. no. 918. Furthermore, Robert Hall remarks that while many overlay bottles have been made with an overlay ring around the mouth, it is rare to find a bottle that has preserved this attribute, because it would have been polished as it would have been chipped or damaged with time. See Robert Hall, Chinese Snuff Bottles XI: The Snow Peaks Collection (London: 2005), cat. no. 13.
