AN AVENTURINE AND OVERLAY GLASS SNUFF BOTTLE

Qianlong period, 乾隆 1736–1795

Clear aquamarine-blue overlay on a swirled milky-white ground with goldstone inclusions sandwiched between the two layers, of pear form with a short cylindrical neck and concave base.

Goldstone is also known as aventurine and was invented by Venetian glass-makers in Murano. For more information on the history of aventurine and its use in Chinese glass, see Hugh Moss, Victor Graham and Ka Bo Tsang, The Art of the Chinese Snuff Bottle: The J & J Collection, 2 volumes (New York: 1993), vol. I, cat. no. 340. It should be noted that most aventurine glass bottles are not overlaid and are transparent. The present example, however, is overlaid on milky-white, creating a translucent body with transparent edges.
