Qianlong period, 乾隆 1736–1795
Red glass on a clear ground carved with a continuous outdoor scene with bamboo and narcissus growing from rockwork and butterflies and a bat among scrolling clouds, the bottle of tall elongated form with a mouth surrounded by a ring of red glass, and a recessed foot.
Bamboo and narcissus growing from rockwork form the rebus "May the group of Immortals congratulate you on your birthday." See Terese Tse Bartholomew, Hidden Meaning in Chinese Art (San Francisco: 2006), no. 7.42.1. The bat and butterflies are symbols of blessing. For a similar bottle slightly smaller with green overlay but carved with the same subject in a similar manner, see Sotheby's New York, The Gerry P. Mack Collection of Important Chinese Snuff Bottles, 25 October 1997, lot 50.
