A Hongmu ice chest

Qing dynasty, 18th to 19th century
Total height: 26 ¾ in (68 cm)
Width: 26 ½ in (67 cm)

Of square section with a metal lining, the ice chest is fitted with a two-part lid carved with two shou characters, a symbol of longevity, and rests on a fitted stand.

During the winter the ice was stored under ground or in caves. The ice was broken in summer and presented for use in such containers sitting either on their stand or directly on a table. The weight of the chest loaded with ice made the strong side handles necessary.
