A blue-white porcelain plate with lotus bouquet design

Yonghzeng to Qianlong period, 1723–1795
Diameter: 11 in (28 cm)
Height: 2 1/8 in (5.5 cm)

The plate is decorated in underglaze blue with a lotus bouquet within a central medallion bordered by a frieze of chrysanthemums, peonies and scrolling tendrils. The back of the rim is similarly decorated, and the foot unglazed. The lotus is a symbol of purity, while the peony and chrysanthemum symbolizes wealth, honor and long life. This classical design goes back to the Ming dynasty, to the reigns of the Yongle and particularly the Xuande emperors. Some of the border decoration confirms its Qing dynasty origin.
