Antique Japanese, Korean and Chinese works of art for sale by Asiantiques.

A rare silver image of two Buddha on a raised platform

Tang dynasty, 618 – 907
Height: 7 ¼ in (18.5 cm)

The image probably belongs to the late Eastern Wei dynasty, 6th century, when these metal sculptures were made on a raised platform and a mandorla ending in a peak at the top. The patina acquired over time has lovely azure tones.

For a similar image and further reading, please see Rose Kerr (editor), Chinese Art and Design; The T. T. Tsui Gallery of Chinese Art (Victoria and Albert Museum, London: 1991), pp. 88-89.

Microscopic and chemical analysis have been performed by Orenda Laboratories and support the above dating.
