An early ivory netsuke of Seiobo Sennin

Unsigned, 18th century

4 1/2in (11.6cm) high

A tall and early figure of Seiobo dressed in an elaborate robe, holding a branch of peaches on her chest, and a large fan in the other hand.

Seiobo is the only female Immortal (sennin) and one of the most important. She is known in China as Xi Wangmu, The Queen Mother of the West. She lives with other Immortals in the Kunlun mountains, where she grows the peach of immortality.
