100 Views Of Edo: Ueno Yamashita by Hiroshige
Depiction of: A springtime view of Gojo Tenjin shrine and adjacent Iseya restaurant in Ueno from the series One
Hundred Famous Views of Edo.
Date: 1858
Size: 14 3/4 x 10 inches
Condition: Excellent. (Matted print)
Description: (This print is attributed at least to the collaboration of Shigenobu, later
Hiroshige II.) The title tells us that this is the area known as Yamashita (Below the Mountain), the broad open space extending from the southern approach. To the lower left is a precisely aligned procession of parasoled ladies-in-waiting to a daimyo. Stopping to gaze at them is a group of commoners, strangely and somewhat awkwardly diminished in size.
